This Sunday there is a community rally taking place in Katoomba to raise
awareness that the last unprotected plateau in the upper Blue Mountains is
under threat of development.
I am planning to head up in the morning so that I can do a short bushwalk
(approximately 3 to 4 hours) around Radiata Plateau, checking out some
potential viewpoints and taking photos of the stunning landscape that is at
risk. If you feel like spending a few hours exploring an interesting
sandstone plateau before joining the community protest, it'd be great to
have some company. The walking will mostly be on track, but there will
probably be some short sections pushing through scrub to get to interesting
looking features. It's suitable for beginners with reasonable fitness.
If you can't make the walk, but would like to find out more about the issue
and support the campaign, here is some information:
Radiata Plateau (Mount Elphinstone) is the last remaining undeveloped
peninsula-plateau in the upper Blue Mountains. It is home to rare and
threatened species, has significant Indigenous and European culturally
significance, and is also a magnet for the local outdoor community (in
particular bushwalkers and rock climbers).
The majority of the plateau, including its stunning sandstone escarpments,
is privately owned. The owners have previously attempted to develop a
conference centre on the site.
The Blue Mountains Conservation Society has launched a campaign to have the
NSW or Federal Government purchase Radiata Plateau and add it to the
neighbouring Blue Mountains National Park.
